Russian-born actress, born in 1900. She trained at the Moscow Art Theatre and emigrated to the United States in the 1920s, where she became a striking character actress in Hollywood silents. She appeared in The Docks of New York (1928) and is best remembered today as the cruel trapeze artist Cleopatra in Tod Browning's Freaks (1932). Her career faded after that notorious film. She died in 1974.
