American actress of the silent era, born Mary Dooley in 1894. She became famous playing exotic, vampish femmes fatales, a type she helped define in 1920s cinema. She appeared opposite Rudolph Valentino in Blood and Sand (1922) and Cobra (1925). Her screen persona was so closely tied to the "vamp" archetype that her career faded as tastes changed with the arrival of sound.
