American film actress (1903-1965) who was one of the first stars of the sound era, nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for The Devil's Holiday (1930). She starred in Laughter (1930) and numerous other Paramount films of the early 1930s. Her singing voice and natural acting style made her a popular leading lady, but her career declined by the mid-1930s and she retired from films.
