American film actor, born in 1887. He began as a stuntman and extra at D.W. Griffith's studio and rose to leading man in the 1920s, starring opposite Gloria Swanson and in Ernst Lubitsch's The Marriage Circle (1924). With sound he shifted to character roles, often playing villains in Westerns and adventure films. He died in 1963.
