British-born character actor who played heavies and authority figures on stage and screen for four decades. Born in 1877, he began as a newspaper cartoonist before turning to acting in England and then Hollywood. In silents he often played villains, including Ghabah in The Son of the Sheik (1926). His dignified bearing kept him busy in supporting roles well into the sound era, including The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938).
