American film director and producer, born in 1900. One of Hollywood's most successful directors, he helmed Little Caesar (1931), which helped define the gangster genre, and later produced The Wizard of Oz (1939). His directing credits span from the silent era through the 1960s and include I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang and Quo Vadis. He died in 1987.
