Maurice Tourneur

French film director, born in 1876. A pioneer of silent cinema, he directed atmospheric, visually sophisticated films in both France and the United States. His notable American films include The Last of the Mohicans (1920), Lorna Doone (1922), and The Christian (1923). He was a major influence on his son, director Jacques Tourneur, and on the development of visual storytelling in early Hollywood.
