Mary Philbin

American film actress. Born in 1903, Philbin was a leading lady of silent films, best known for playing Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera (1925) and for her role in The Man Who Laughs (1928). She was a star of Universal's silent roster but her career did not survive the transition to sound, and she retired in the early 1930s. She died in 1993.
