American actress, born Lucile Vasconcellos Langhanke in 1906. Her career spanned five decades, from silent films to television. She appeared opposite Douglas Fairbanks in Don Q, Son of Zorro (1925) and opposite John Barrymore in Beau Brummell (1924) before becoming a major star in the sound era, winning an Academy Award for The Great Lie (1941) and memorably playing Brigid O'Shaughnessy in The Maltese Falcon (1941).
