German actress and singer, born Marie Magdalene Dietrich in 1901. She became an international star with The Blue Angel (1930), in which she introduced the song "Falling in Love Again," and followed director Josef von Sternberg to Hollywood, where they made Morocco (1930), Shanghai Express (1932), and five more films together. Known for her androgynous glamour and smoky voice, she also toured as a cabaret performer for decades. She became a U.S. citizen and entertained American troops during World War II. She died in 1992.
