American film actress, born in 1897. A chorus girl who became a film star, she is better known today as the long-time companion of newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst, and her career was long overshadowed by the myth that Hearst's money was the only reason she worked. In fact she was a gifted comedienne, as Show People (1928) and The Patsy make clear. Hearst's insistence on casting her in serious roles hid the talent that suited her best.
