Margaret Dumont

American stage and film actress, born in 1882. The enduring foil to Groucho Marx, she played the dignified, wealthy dowager heaped with insults in seven of the Marx Brothers' films, beginning with The Cocoanuts (1929). A trained opera singer, she reportedly never quite understood the jokes, which is part of what made her performance work.
