American film actress, born in 1894. Discovered by D.W. Griffith, she became one of his most trusted players, memorable as the Dear One in Intolerance (1916) and the little sister in The Birth of a Nation (1915). Her expressive, naturalistic acting style was unusual for the period. She continued working into the sound era, often in small roles. She died in 1968.
