Canadian-born American producer and director, born 1880 in Melbourne, Quebec. The founder of Keystone Studios and the man most responsible for the slapstick comedy short, he built an empire of two-reelers around the Keystone Cops, pie fights, and bathing beauties, and gave early breaks to Charlie Chaplin, Roscoe Arbuckle, Mabel Normand, and Ben Turpin. His company, Mack Sennett Comedies, produced The Extra Girl (1923) and The Daredevil (1923). He received an honorary Academy Award in 1937. He died in 1960.
