American actress and comedienne, born 1892 in New Brighton, Pennsylvania. One of the first true movie stars, she began at Biograph under D.W. Griffith, became a cornerstone of Mack Sennett's Keystone studio, and wrote and directed much of her own material at a time when few women did either. She starred opposite Charlie Chaplin and Roscoe Arbuckle and headlined features like The Extra Girl (1923). Her career was slowed by scandals she was never charged in and by tuberculosis, which killed her in 1930.
