Louise Dresser

American actress and singer who moved from vaudeville to a brief but memorable film career. Born in 1878, she was a leading lady of the silent era, often playing strong, mature women. She is best remembered as the imperious Czarina Catherine in The Eagle (1925) opposite Rudolph Valentino. She was nominated for the first Academy Award for Best Actress for A Ship Comes In (1928).
