American actor, born in 1880. A former mathematics teacher and athlete, he became a character actor whose scarred, tough face made him a natural for sergeants and brawlers. He is best known as Katczinsky, the veteran soldier who mentors the recruits in All Quiet on the Western Front (1930). He died of stomach cancer in 1931, just as his film career was peaking, cutting short a promising transition into sound pictures.
