American stage and film actor. Born in 1883, Chaney was known as "The Man of a Thousand Faces" for his skill with makeup, which he designed himself for nearly every role. He was a leading star of silent horror, playing the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera (1925) and Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923). He often played damaged or outcast characters and brought a physical, contortionist skill to his performances. He made only one sound film before his death in 1930.
