British-born American actor born in 1885 who specialized in suave villains and mad scientists in horror films. He played Walter Stevens in The Gorilla (1939) and appeared in many horror pictures of the 1930s and 1940s, including Son of Frankenstein (1939) and House of Dracula (1945). His career was damaged by a 1942 scandal but he continued working in B-pictures until his death in 1946.
