American actor, born in 1879. A distinguished character actor at MGM for decades, he often played judges, generals, and patriarchs. He appears as the prison warden in The Big House (1930) and is best remembered as Judge Hardy, the wise father in the long-running Andy Hardy series of the 1930s and 1940s. He was nominated for Best Actor for The Patriot (1928). He died in 1953.
