American actress and a leading lady of the silent screen, born 1893 in New Orleans. She rose to stardom at Famous Players-Lasky under Cecil B. DeMille, who cast her in Manslaughter (1922) and The Ten Commandments (1923). Known for her dark bob and sophisticated manner, she was one of the studio's biggest draws of the 1920s. Her career faded with the coming of sound, and she retired from regular acting in the early 1930s. She died in 1985.
