American cartoonist, comedian, and film director, born in 1889. He began as a newspaper cartoonist before moving into comedy shorts, where he developed a frantic, gag-driven style. He wrote, directed, and starred in the 1925 feature The Wizard of Oz, playing the Scarecrow. His career faded quickly after the silent era and he died in 1928.
