German actor and director, born Kurt Gerson in 1897. A popular character actor in Weimar cinema, he played the magician Kiepert in The Blue Angel (1930) and originated the song "Mack the Knife" in the premiere of Brecht and Weill's The Threepenny Opera. Jewish, he was trapped in Europe after the Nazis rose to power and was eventually deported to Theresienstadt, where he was forced to direct a propaganda film. He was murdered at Auschwitz in 1944.
