Joseph H. Lewis

American film director, born in 1907. A skilled B-movie director who elevated low-budget material with striking visual compositions, he is best known for the film noir classic Gun Crazy (1950) and The Big Combo (1955), celebrated for John Alton's chiaroscuro cinematography. He later directed extensively in television. He died in 2000.
