John Gilbert

American actor who was one of the biggest stars of the silent era, often compared to Valentino. He starred in The Show (1927) for Tod Browning and in Flesh and the Devil (1926) opposite Greta Garbo. His career declined sharply with the arrival of sound, a fall often attributed to studio politics and audience reaction to his voice.
