American actor, born in 1882. The most acclaimed stage actor of his generation to cross into film, he came from the great theatrical Barrymore family with siblings Lionel and Ethel. His silent performances in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920), Sherlock Holmes (1922), Don Juan (1926), and The Beloved Rogue (1927) set a new standard for screen acting. He moved successfully into sound with Grand Hotel (1932) and Dinner at Eight (1933), though his career declined as drink took its toll. Known as "The Great Profile." He died in 1942.
