American actress and singer, born in 1903. A soprano with a Broadway background, she made her film debut in The Love Parade (1930) opposite Maurice Chevalier and became one of the biggest stars of the 1930s musical. Her pairings with Nelson Eddy, beginning with Naughty Marietta (1935), made her a box-office draw for MGM through the decade. She also worked with the Marx Brothers in A Night at the Opera (1935). She died in 1965.
