Jean Hersholt

Danish-born film actor, born in 1886. He moved to Hollywood in 1913 and became a prolific character actor, playing Marcus Schouler in Erich von Stroheim's Greed (1924). A dedicated humanitarian, he helped establish the Motion Picture Relief Fund, and the Academy's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is named for him. He died in 1956.
