American actress, born Harlean Carpenter in 1911. The original "blonde bombshell" of the sound era, she made her film debut in Hell's Angels (1930) and became one of MGM's biggest stars in the 1930s. Her films include Platinum Blonde (1931), Red Dust (1932), Dinner at Eight (1933), and Libeled Lady (1936). She combined a platinum-blonde glamour with a sharp, self-aware comic timing that set her apart from later imitators. She died of kidney failure in 1937 at age 26.
