American film actor and director (1897-1939) who directed many Laurel and Hardy comedies at Hal Roach Studios, including Should Married Men Go Home? (1928) and the Oscar-winning The Music Box (1932). He began as an actor in silent comedies, often appearing alongside his brother Charley Chase, before transitioning to directing. His career declined in the late 1930s due to health problems and alcoholism.
