American actor, born in 1914. One of the first major child stars in film history, he shot to fame opposite Charlie Chaplin in The Kid (1921) at age seven. His tearful, expressive performance made him an international sensation and one of the highest-paid stars of the early 1920s. As an adult he found a second career in television, most notably as Uncle Fester in The Addams Family (1964). He died in 1984.
