Three lonely millionaire engineers — Harry Carey, C. Aubrey Smith,
and Charles Winninger — throw their wallets out the window on
Christmas Eve to see who returns them, and end up adopting the two
strangers who do: a young singer and a cowboy who fall in love.
When the three men die in a plane crash, they return as ghosts to
shepherd the couple through the consequences of the money they left
behind. Also released as Beyond Christmas, it is a gentle holiday
fantasy directed by A. Edward Sutherland for RKO, and its dark
second half — one ghost tempted away from the light — surprises
anyone expecting pure sentiment. The film entered the public domain
through non-renewal of copyright.
