Russian-born French film actor, born 1889 in Penza. One of the great stars of Russian cinema before the Revolution, he emigrated to Paris and became the leading man of Films Albatros, co-writing and starring in the serial The House of Mystery (1923). His expressive, theatrical acting style and dark features made him a major draw in 1920s European cinema. His career faded with the coming of sound. He died in 1939.
