American actress whose poise and warmth made her one of the most versatile stars of the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1898, she moved from opera and Broadway to Hollywood, where she moved easily between melodrama, romance, and comedy. She is remembered for The Awful Truth, Love Affair, and Penny Serenade (1941), the last of which earned her one of five Best Actress nominations. Though she never won a competitive Oscar, she was awarded an honorary Kennedy Center honor late in life.
