American industrialist, aviator, and filmmaker, born in 1905. Heir to a tool-manufacturing fortune, he used his money to finance ambitious films and to set aviation records. He produced and directed Hell's Angels (1930), a sprawling World War I aviation epic that took three years to make and cost several lives. He later produced The Outlaw (1943) and ran RKO Pictures. As a pilot he set speed records and designed the H-1 racer. In later life he became a reclusive billionaire. He died in 1976.
