British actor, born in 1890. He lost a leg in World War I and continued to act with a prosthetic limb, a fact he concealed from most audiences. He became a leading man in Hollywood in the 1930s, equally adept at drama and comedy. He is the star of Hitchcock's Murder! (1930) and appeared in Trouble in Paradise (1932), The Letter (1940), and Foreign Correspondent (1940). His smooth, cultured voice made him a natural for radio and he later hosted a popular mystery series. He died in 1966.
