American film director (1900-1971) and one of the "Hollywood Ten" writers and directors who were blacklisted for refusing to cooperate with the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1947. After serving a prison sentence for contempt of Congress, Biberman directed Salt of the Earth (1954), an independently produced drama about a mining strike, made outside the Hollywood studio system with fellow blacklistees Paul Jarrico and Michael Wilson.
