American film director, producer, and actor, born in 1886. One of the most prolific and enduring directors of Hollywood's golden age, his career spanned from the silent era through the 1960s. He directed Stella Dallas (1925), The Song of Bernadette (1943), and Twelve O'Clock High (1949), among many others. He was a founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and directed more than 100 films over a career that lasted nearly half a century.
