American character actor and stage performer, born in 1868. He became one of Charlie Chaplin's most reliable supporting players, appearing in The Gold Rush (1925), City Lights (1931), and Modern Times (1936), among others. Chaplin often cast him in multiple roles within a single film, and Bergman also worked behind the scenes as an assistant director on several Chaplin productions.
