American comedian, born in 1884. He came to films late, after a long vaudeville career, and rose quickly to feature stardom in the mid-1920s with Tramp, Tramp, Tramp (1926), The Strong Man (1926), and Long Pants (1927). His persona was a childlike, bewildered innocent who survived chaos by accident, a contrast to the athleticism of Keaton or the sentiment of Chaplin. His peak was brief, and his career declined after he took over directing his own pictures. He continued in shorts and character roles until his death in 1944.
