A reliable MGM contract director through the 1920s and 1930s, he directed The Broadway Melody (1929), the first sound film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. His career stretched from silent two-reelers in the 1910s to B-pictures in the 1940s, with a knack for getting pictures finished on time and on budget.
