Swedish actress, born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in 1905. She moved from Stockholm to Hollywood under contract to MGM and became one of the most celebrated and enigmatic stars of the screen. Her silent films with director Clarence Brown and co-star John Gilbert, including Flesh and the Devil (1926) and Love (1927), made her an international icon. She transitioned to sound with Anna Christie (1930) and starred in Grand Hotel (1932), Camille (1936), and Ninotchka (1939). She retired abruptly in 1941 and lived the rest of her life in seclusion in New York. She died in 1990.
