Drama, Romance
Rudolph Valentino plays an Italian count and big-game hunter who moves to New York to work for a friend's antiques firm and is drawn into an affair with his employer's wife, a predatory socialite played by Nita Naldi. The title refers to the cobra that mesmerizes its prey, a metaphor the film lays on heavily. Valentino is in his element as the charming, doomed lover, and Nita Naldi's vamp persona is given full rein. The film was one of Valentino's last releases before his death in 1926, and it is a late showcase for the star persona that made him a phenomenon. Published in 1925, it is in the public domain in the United States.

His mother disapproves and dispossesses Leonora's family. Leonora goes to Paris and becomes a famous opera singer, while Rafael stays home and becomes engaged to another woman. When Leonora returns, Rafael saves her life during a flash flood and their passion reawakens — but duty and family intervene. Produced by Irving Thalberg for Cosmopolitan Pictures, the film launched Garbo's legendary Hollywood career.
