French illusionist and filmmaker (1861-1938), widely regarded as the father of special effects in cinema. A stage magician turned filmmaker, Melies pioneered techniques including multiple exposure, time-lapse photography, dissolves, and hand-painted color. His most famous film, A Trip to the Moon (1902), is one of the most iconic images in early cinema. He produced over 500 films through his Star Film company before going bankrupt in 1913.
