American film director known for a remarkably wide range, from screwball comedy to grave wartime drama. Born in 1904, he began in Hollywood as a cameraman on Laurel and Hardy shorts before moving to directing in the 1930s. His early films, including Penny Serenade (1941), showed a gift for character and feeling. After serving in World War II and filming the liberation of concentration camps, his work grew more somber and ambitious: A Place in the Sun, Shane, Giant, and The Diary of Anne Frank. He won the Best Director Oscar twice.
