American film director, born in 1899. Known for his skill with actors and his sophisticated comedies, he began directing on Broadway before moving to Hollywood. His early films include The Royal Family of Broadway (1930, co-directed), Little Women (1933), and David Copperfield (1935). He later directed The Philadelphia Story (1940), Gaslight (1944), Adam's Rib (1949), and My Fair Lady (1964), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Director. He died in 1983.
