American comedian, actor, and writer, born 1896 as Nathan Birnbaum. Best known as one half of the comedy duo Burns and Allen, starring with his wife Gracie Allen in The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show (1950-1958) on radio and television. His trademark cigar, arched eyebrow, and direct-to-camera asides made him one of television's most distinctive personalities. He won an Academy Award for The Sunshine Boys (1975) and continued performing well into his nineties. He died in 1996 at age 100.
