George A. Romero

American filmmaker who invented the modern zombie film with Night of the Living Dead (1968). He directed five more Dead films over the next 40 years. His work combined horror with social commentary on race, consumerism, and class. He was based in Pittsburgh, where he made most of his films. He died in 2017.
