American actor. Born in 1901, Cooper was one of the leading stars of Hollywood's golden age, known for a quiet, understated style that suited both westerns and dramas. His films include Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Meet John Doe (1941), High Noon (1952), and Sergeant York (1941), for which he won an Academy Award. He won a second for High Noon. He died in 1961.
