Austrian-American film director, screenwriter, and producer. Born in Vienna in 1890, Lang was a central figure of German cinema in the 1920s. His films include Metropolis (1927), M (1931), and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933). He left Germany after the Nazis came to power and continued his career in Hollywood, where he made films such as The Big Heat (1953). His visual style and his interest in mass control, surveillance, and fate shaped crime and science fiction cinema for decades. He died in 1976.
